Bite The Bullet

The prize is high but the race is long - over 700 miles across frozen mountain paths and sun parched deserts. The nine entrants include Sam Clayton (Gene Hackman) a one time rough trader; Miss Jones (Candice Bergen), a former prostitute who can ride, drink, swear and shoot like a man; Luke Matthews (James Coburn), a happy-go -lucky mercenary; 'Mister' (Ben Johnson) , a wise old timer; and wild young man (Jan-Michael Vincent), looking for a reputation and a titled Englishman (Ian Bannen) seeking a challenge. Each has a special reason for wantng to win. . . but some will never see the winning line. Finally, a lover's betrayal brings death to some and inspires a special kind of brotherhood among the gritty band of survivors.
