OLIVER REED AS THE BUTLER, SATISFYING THE DEPRAVED NEEDS OF HIS MASTER'S SERVANT GIRLS IN HIS PLOT TO TAKE-OVER THE FAMILY FORTUNES
In this quite memorable film Oliver Reed portrays Tom, a butler employed by Gregory who has inherited 'Swanbrook' - a charming Elizabethan mansion. Gregory is obsessed with the need to maintain the family inheritance through lineage and not content with already having two children by his wife Lily he takes on a series of mistresses with the sole aim of increasing his heirs. This obsession apart, Gregory is dedicated to the sensitivity of painting and his generosity of spirit often impels him to treat the servants as equals. Tom has desires of his own to assume the inheritance of Swanbrook and in a most devious way establishes complete trust with Gregory who allows Tom increasing responsibility for the estate, and through his latest governess Carlotta to mistreat the children. This situation developing due to Lily's prolonged absence as a professional singer. Tom transfers the respect the servants once had for Gregory to himself by depraving them and continually satisfying their aroused and throughly selfish instincts. Ultimately Tom's take-over is complete.
