Meet Gordon Brittas, the new manager of Whitbury Newtown Leisure Centre, a man for whom sports management is a vocation comparable only to a priest's calling, a man with a dream to bringing the community together through sport. But, as his long-suffering wife knows only too well, his "input" invariably serves not so much as a lubricant for the wheels of the fitness industry but rather more a shovel full of grit! LAYING THE FOUNDATIONS With half the staff walking out, the builders on strike and a sports coach firing sharpened table tennis bats at him during a staff meeting, Brittas' first day as a manager could be better... BACK FROM THE DEAD Brittas has been dead for three days (apparently crushed under a steel press at a conference in Bulgaria) and Helen is about to marry a man she met at his funeral service... AN INSPECTOR CALLS A pigeon is loose in the gym, Brittas has called in a man with a buzzard to catch it, the Southern Area Inspector is due any moment - Brittas is going to lose his job... SET IN CONCRETE Brittas decides that constant disasters at the Centre are caused by Sick Building Syndrome and calls in a consultant.
