ONE YEAR ON A DESERTED TROPICAL ISLAND. 'Wife' 20-30 needed to accompany man 35+. Write to Box 775 with details and evening phone number.
The above advertisement appeared in the personal columns of 'Time Out' magazine. The man who placed it was Gerald Kingsland, middle-aged, divorced with two kids. The girl who answered it was Lucy Irvine, 25, blonde, beautiful and restless. What happened when they met and eventually agreed to become man and wife in order to spend a year alone on a desert island is the story of Castaway.
Oliver Reed is Gerald Kingsland, a hell-raising chauvinist obsessed with comsummating his bizzare marriage. Ravishing newcomer Amanda Donohoe is Lucy Irvine, independent and often terrified. Castaway is a true story. It is a story of survival against all odds, of courage and recklessness and eventually of a love that could never blossom.
Nicolas Roeg, director of 'Don't Look Now' makes the unbearable paradise and loveliness of Tuin Island consume the viewer until they, like Gerald and Lucy, cannot bear to leave and yet cannot hope to stay.
