The Twentieth Indian Light Cavalry preserves the might of the British Raj in a lonely outpost on the North-West frontier during the last years of the nineteenth century. Life within the Mess moves easily along traditional lines. Honour is something rarely mentioned; but there is tangible evidence of it in revered trophies and the enduring names of its heroes. But the arrival of a disenchanted young subaltern, determined to return to England as soon as possible, precipitates a series of events which threatens to destroy the honour of the regiment. There are fine performances from some of Britain's most respected actors - Richard Attenborough, Trevor Howard, and Christopher Plummer-and the American Stacy Keach as the senior officers bent on avoiding a public scandal, and from Michael York as the innocent and upright young recruit and determined to reveal the truth. James Faulkner and Susannah York as the disreputable subaltern and pretty, flighty widow at the heart of the affair.
