ON THE CHAIN-GANG THEY'D SEEN EVERY KIND OF MAN - BUT LUKE BECAME A LEGEND
Lucas Jackson is sentenced to two years on a southern chain-gang for breaking parking meters during a drunken spree. The chain-gang leader Dragline is unfavourably impressed by Luke's cool, resourceful attitude. The resulting tensions end in a fight. Luke's guts and his dogged refusal to quit gains him the gang leadership. After two escape attempts he is brutally beaten by the sadistic camp guards until he begs for his life. His fellow prisoners are now contemptuous, thinking their leader's spirit can be broken. Luke's submission is merely a pretence, and he escapes once again, this time in a truck. Dragline impulsively jumps aboard, but is rejected by Luke, who takes refuge in a small church. Dragline exposes the hiding place, which precipitates the final confrontation between Luke and the guards.
