A FILM IS BEING MADE - BUT WHAT IS FACT AND WHAT IS FICTION?
Reality and make believe move back and forth and sometimes become one and the same as a film company in Paris goes about the strange business of making a movie. The director is Ferrand. The stars are Alphonse, his movie father Alexandre, Severine is the mother and wife, while Julie is the leading lady. Everyone gossips about everyone else. Alphonse wants Liliane, an apprentice script girl, to marry him, but is insanely jealous of the men around her. There are production difficulties, and Ferrand has problems with the actors. An English stuntman arrives to do a car crash sequence. Liliane falls for him and Alphonse is abandoned. The director explains that the crash is to be in "la nuit Americaine" - that is simulated night filmed in the daytime by the use of filters. The rejected Alphonse wants to leave the film but is consoled by Julie, who finds herself in his arms and then in his bed. The film making progresses until one day the company is shocked and the production in crisis when one of the stars is killed in an accident.
