WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN THE WEST'S MOST FAMOUS GUNFIGHT?
The legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral has been the climax of many Westerns. But it has never been more excitingly recreated as in this unusual and enjoyable action movie which brilliantly depicts how eight men died in as many seconds in Tombstone, Arizona on October 26th 1881.
What gives the film its considerable facination is that screenwriter Pete Hamill and director Frank Perry have focused on the charater of dentist-turned-professional gunighter Doc Holliday, rather than the usual hero, U.S. Marshal Wyatt Earp. Holliday is played with great skill and power by Stacy Keach who makes him totally credible, a morose loner who is finally drawn into the bloody confrontation with the Clanton gang because of his friendship with Earp. Keach's fine performance gives the film a strong centre and a first-rate portrayals by Faye Dunaway, as the mistress who leaves him when he chooses the way of violence, and Harris Yulin as a believably scheming and opportunistic Earp add considerable impact. By going behind the myths and legends of the West, Doc succeeds in becoming a unique and compelling retelling of the greatest gunfight in Western film history.
