Dolly Parton brings her uniquely American superstar talent to the stage of London's Dominon Theatre in her triumphal appearence of May 21, 1983. A bestselling songwriter, accomplished musician, country Entertainer of the Year, and sex symbol, she's a performer whose very presense lights up the stage. From her landing at Heathrow Airport, through an insightful impromptu conference, to the tender closing moments of her concert, "Dolly in London" traces a day in Dolly Parton's life. It is no ordinary day, however, for it marks her conquest of another continent. Resplendent in her revealing costumes, Dolly dominates the stage from her opening number, the spirited pop-rock song, "Baby, I'm Burning." "Her millions of loyal country fans then come in for a tur with an array of her biggest hits, "Jolene," "Coat of Many Colors," and Appalachian Memories." One of the highlights of the evening is a rendition of "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind." sung a cappella in perfect harmony with three boys from her band. Afterward they do the same number as if it were a record being played at the wrong speed for hilarious effect. Dolly then demonstartes her command of contemporary sounds of her beloved gospel music. Her accomplished band members add a note of their own with instrumental versions of "Dueling banjos" and "Orange Blossom Special," then Dolly changes pace with the delightful song called "I'm Still Doing the Rhumba" and an absolutely uncanny imitation of Elvis Presley singing "All Shock Up." Those who know Dolly through her smash movies, "9to5" and "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas," know how charming she can be, and her running patter is as entertaining as her phenomenal musicianship. After a standing ovation she returns to close the show with her favourite, "I Will Always Love You" Judging by the Britions' thunderous applause it seems clear that they will always love Dolly Parton.
