There's trouble afoot at the Bendinck Hotel following the arrival of Mr Marcus Carrington, rich man of the moment in stocks and shares. His pedigree is impeccable - the Major has fond memories of his wondrous mother Lottie - and what brown eyes! Louisa is confident that his financial acumen will make them all rich. Indeed, it seems there's no end to his talents, as even steadfast Mary falls victom to his charms. Meanwhile, the now prosperous Bendinck faces uncertain times. The lessors are eager to lay claim to the once derelict hotel,claiming Louisa has broken the terms to her lease with immoral practices. However, Mrs Trotter is adamant she and her establishment are beyond reproach - until a journalist starts to sniff around the events of her past.. Finally, the onset of Ascot and the extravagant entertaining are not without their share of problems for erstwhile "Queen of Cooks". As Louisa agrees to organise a special dinner for an old friend and ex-equerry to the King, Sir John Farjeon, she finds herself caught up with Charlie once more - and one of his more dubious friends...
