The secret ambition of a bingo-caller (ALBERT FINNEY) in a Liverpool working men's club is to become a Bogart-like private-eye. As a birthday present to himself he runs a newspaper advertisment offering his services as private investigator. To his surprise he receives a summons to a hotel where a fat man hands over a package containing a photograph of a girl, one thousand pounds and a gun. What began as a daydream suddenly becomes real and dangerous...
