James Ivory's sensual film of India today and in the twenties follows the lives of two English women, played by Julie Christie and Greta Scacchi, and their fatal fascination for a continent where the lust for power, violence and passion overshadows the facade of British respectability. History repeats itself as Anne (Julie Christie) delves into the scandalous past of her great aunt (Greta Scacchi) and is ultimately seduced by the mysteries of an Orient that remains as fascinating today as it was fifty years ago.
