Lusty sailors, convicts, savage tribes and shipwrecks figure large in the true-life story of Eliza Fraser, set against the unrest of an Australian penal colony in 1836. Owing to the illness of her husband, Captain james Fraser, he and Eliza are due to set sail for England aboard his ship, 'The Stirling Castle'. Fraser puts ashore at the convict colony of Moreton Bay to rid himself of rakish Captain Rory McBryde, who is enamoured by Eliza's charms. They are entertained by the Commandant, Captain Foster Fyans and meet one of the convicts, David Bracefell. The attraction of Bracewell for Eliza is instant. The Frasers' set sail again, but are ship wrecked off the coast where savage natives abound. Fraser is shocked to learn from Eliza that she believes she is to be married to the Aboriginal Chieftain. Bracefell helps her escape, but Captain Fraser is killed. Eliza returns to Sydney where many further exciting adventures befall her before she makes her fortune and finds new romance.
