A comedy for the incurably romantic.
HE FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS PATIENT - AND THEN HIS TROUBLES REALLY BEGAN!
Dudley Moore, the star of 10 and Arthur, gives one of his most assured and delightful performances and is, said The Mail on Sunday. 'at his most persuasive' in this funny romantic comedy. In it Moore plays a successful married New York psychiatrist who becomes obsessed with a beautiful young patient - beautifully played by Eizabeth McGovern - and his life is thrown into turmoil as he tries to woo her, even breaking into her apartment to read her secret diary. Finally he succeeds and the two of them fail in love - but his troubles are only just beginning. . .
Alec Guinness appears to considerable comic effect as the spirit of the legendary father of modern psychiatry Sigmund Freud who materializes in Moore's office to offer occassional advice, and the strong supporting cast includes John Huston, Ron Silver and Alan King. The clever screenplay is by Marshall Brickman, Woody Allen's long-time collaborator and his slick and sensitive direction adds to the impact of an enjoyable movie which, noted the Daily Mail, 'witty, touching and it gives Moore the chance to break out of the Hollywood mould his success in Hollywood has imposed on him', while The New York Times commented that 'It proceeds with such good humoured, consistent intelligence, that is almost a new form of comedy. . .high praise'.
