The early 1800s. Zacharay Bass (Richard Harris), an ex-whaler turned mountain man, is guiding Capt. Henry Filmore (John Huston) and his expedition of fur-trappers across the Northwest Territory, a forbidding landscape whose inhabitants are the hostile and savage Arikara Indians.
Equally savage are the wild animals that stalk the land-as Zach almost fatally discovers when he is mauled by a grizzly bear and left behind by the practical, hard-hearted Filmore to die.
Zach's indomitable will to survive and avenge himself on the man who abandoned him is,however, even greater than the appalling wounds inflicted by the grizzly, and just how, against overwhelmingly cruel odds he manages to keep alive, is what Man in the Wilderness is all about.
