SOMETIMES IT'S HARD TO KNOW WHO YOUR REAL FRIENDS ARE Mick Travis is training as a coffee salesman with Imperial Coffee Company. A stroke of luck lands him the job of area manager for north-east region. He witnesses a fatal crash between a sports car and a van. When the traffic police arrive they tell Mick to clear off so they can help themselves to the contents of the van. At his destination Mick makes new friends, especially with his landlady, whom he finds occupying his bed when he gets home at night. He is given a gold suit by Monty, an elderly philosopher-tailor, and a night out at a strip club. His first business call is the Atomic Research Establishment, where he is arrested and interrogated . He signs a confession but is rescued by the Tea Lady from the electric chair, making his escape as the place blows up. For a while he wonders the scorched earth in his gold suit. After going to Church and giving thanks to God, he arrives at a medical research clinic and encounters Professor Milar. Mick leases the brilliant but ruthless professor the experimental rights to his body, but after seeing a victim of Milar's research he quickly escapes. Rounding a corner on his bike he narrowly misses a minibus containing Alan and his group together with Patricia, tearaway daughter of a leading industrialist.
