WHO'S LISTENING (Originally transmitted 27 December 1990)
"All the miseries of the world seem 100 times worse at Christmas!" As Christmas approaches, Victor Meldrew's miserable attitude would make Scrooge look like Pollyanna. Writing Christmas off as a glorified trade fair, he also has no time for any religious sentiment. As Margaret observes, it's not that her husband doesn't believe in God anymore, it's just that they haven't been on speaking terms for a long time! With the unfortunate delivery of 263 garden gnomes to his doorstep, it seems that Victor's pessimism may be justified. But then a number of strange coincidences occur, which leave Victor wondering if someone, or something, is in fact "listening in"...
THE MAN IN THE LONG BLACK COAT (Originally transmited 30th December 1991)
"I don't know what to do about Patrick and Victor. I mean it's one thing to call someone a tosspot to their face, but to go to the trouble of having it iced on a Thornton's chocolate..."
Poor Pippa and Margaret are at a loss to know how to rsolve their husbands' seven month old feud. It seems that no scheme is too underhand for Victor Meldrew, even if it involves teaching the local cat to vomit on Patick's front lawn!
But Victor's preoccupation with his neighbourly vendetta has left him unaware of the extent of which his own problems have been piling up-literally! As well as developing an undignified case of heamorrhoids, he is also about to discover some rather distressing news about a pile of manure he bought froma man in a long black coat...
