On being released from prison, where he has become an excellent singer and songwriter, Bobby Ogden travels to Texas in hot pursuit of country-and-western singer Garland Dupree who blatantly fliched his best song and is passing it off as his own. The accidental shooting of Dupree by Ogden launches a major manhunt for the ex-con (as well as several spectacular chases), but it all comes right in the end when sexy Tina Waters, one of the singers in Dupree's group, takes a fancy to the fugitive.
Through some fancy manipulative public relations, Tina turns him into a major recording star and folk hero, at the same time exacting a cynical revenge on the cut-throat music business by taking the market for every dollar she can get.
