"You should of put me first"
"Love, I do"
"Then promise me you won't go, Ross."
"I have already said I will."
"Judas! You'd do anything for anyone except me!"
As the French Revolution grows bloodier by the day, Ross Poldark returns home from the army to find a war on his own soil: his old aunt Agatha is dispossed and in her place an embittered George Warleggan smugly sits on Poldark land, Elizabeth by his side, confidently awaiting the birth of a son and heir. As his power grows and Warleggan tyranny once again crushes the local people, Ross is outraged at the injustice of it all. Will the feud between their famlies never die?
Meanwhile, Ross' friend, Doctor Dwight Enys is missing in action, his ship wrecked on French soil. As his lover Caroline waits in vain, Ross undertakes to get word of him somehow. However, with prisoners being tortured and suspicious strangers shot on sight, the news from France is bleak. The truth must be sought in person. But who could undertake such a dangerous mission? Demelza begs Ross not to go himself. But a Poldark promise has been made.
