Small Box - Retail Tape
Passion, tears and embittered love in 18th century Cornwall - the dramatic family saga sweeps on to BBC Video.
"You can support her and the child but why must you take it upon yourself to marry her? Have you thought of the barriers between you of class and culture, of mannrers and taste? How can you cross them? You'd be forever leaving her behind."
Spurred on by his innate sense of responsibility, Ross marries the pregnant Demelza, leaving a distraught Elizabeth in his wake trapped in a loveless marriage to his debt-ridden cousin Francis. But is, as Elizabeth prophecies, the marriage doomed to failure? Ross is forced to turn his attention towards matters of business. Can he save his beloved mines with a new scheme? It seems so simple to him. The Cornish miners must increase their profits by forming a consortium to build their own smelting works. Only the mighty Warleggen family would object, for as the middle men involved it is in their intrest to maintain the smelting works up country. But Ross is more than a match for the notorious banking family - all he has is to keep the names of his fellow investors secret. However, he hasn't reckoned with Francis' weakness for keeping a promise or the Warleggen's financial hold over his partners...
