Sean Penn and Madonna romance the Orient as they find themselves on the dangeous trail of 'Faraday's Flowers; a fortune in stolen opium, lost somewhere on the lethal bacstreets of 1939 Shanghai. Madonna plays innocent missionary, Gloria Tatlock, woman determined to find the opium to alleviate the awful suffering of soldiers injured in the China-Japan War. Sean Penn is Glendon Wasey, tie salesman and soldier of fortune, equally determined to get the hell out of Shangai and back to good ol' USA before all hell breaks loose.
To both, the opium provides an answer. The only trouble is, every sneakthief, jackal, and two bit hood in China wants a piece of the action, not to mention the sinister police chief and the mysterious empress China Doll who may hold the key to a fortune far greater even than the opium.
Shanghai Surprise is a heady brew set as it is against the tempestuous back-drop of a nation on the brink of a world war. George Harrison's magnificent soundtrack complements breathtaking set-pieces in this sparkling romantic adventure.
