IN THE GREAT TRADITION OF "ROOTS" THE POWERFUL AND DEVASTATING DRAMA OF SLAVE TRADERS AND THEIR VICTIMS
Africa, in 1884, is being divided up into colonies by the World Powers and slavery is at its peak. Max von Erken, after fighting an illegal duel in Germany, is forced to flee the country with his beautiful young wife, Anna (BRITT EKLAND), and heads for Africa. They find themselves with a mixed assortment of characters on a paddlesteamer [sic] bound for a Trading Post in Karimba owned by the strange and secretive Alex MacKenzie (TREVOR HOWARD). on [sic] the steamer Steven, Alec's nephew, arouses Max's jealousy over Anna. When the Trading Post is attacked by native warriors lead by slave trader Musulma, MacKenzie lays plans for defence against further raids. He orders Steven to take Mazu, a chief's son captured by the slavers, and hunt for another slaver, Erico Da Silva. Steven and Mazu are seized by slavers and chained ready for sale. They kill their guards after experiencing some of the horrors of the slave trek. Meanwhile, von Erken has left the Trading Post with Anna. Their boat is swept away in the rapids, and Max gallantly rescues Anna before plunging to his death over a giant waterfall. Anna returns alone through the jungle to the Trading Post where she finds Steven. The slavers are now fighting amongst themselves for possession of the great slave trek. The mysterious MacKenzie emerges as the biggest slave trader of them all. The climax is a pitched battle fought on the paddle steamer deck. MacKenzie is killed. Steven and Anna, though badly wounded, escape. Mazu and his girl, also wounded, make their escape. Hassan the Arab slaver continues with his captives to the coast, where a boat is waiting to take them into a life of slavery.
