A BARE CHEEK MADE HIM HIS FORTUNE
So Fine is a whacky comedy, written and directed by Andrew Bergman, till now, better known as the scenarist for Blazing Saddles and The In-Laws. Ryan O'Neal is Bobby Fine, a professor of literature at Chippenango State College, who is pulled from the confines of his campus to help save his rag-trade father, Jack ( the splendid Jack Warden) from the loan shark, Eddie (Richard Kiel), of whom he has fallen foul.
This Bobby does successfully, when he inadvertently creates a new look in denim, the 'peek-a-boo' jean. Jeans with a see-through polythene panel cut into the backside which their saucy allure, became a fashion craze that sweps the country. With business booming, Jack can repay Eddie, meanwhile, Bobby, who has fallen in love with Lira, the glamorous Italian wife of the towering loan shark, returns to college.
After much puffing and blowing, the film rises to really funny heights. When, in the climax, Lira gives an astonishing performance as Desdemona in Verdi's Othello, whilst Bobby takes refuge from the rampaging Eddie, under her stage bed.
