J.P. Tanner, played by Academy Award winning actor Jon Voight, is divorced father of three that has never been able to deal with the responsibilites of beinga father. He preferred to give the responsibilitiy of raising his children to his ex-wife and her husband, played by Richard Crenna. In "Table for Five" Tanner decides to 'make a come-back' into his children's lives by taking them on a Mediterrianean cruise. It isn't long before J.P. discovers that being a father is not easy.
His youngest son Truman-Paul is fragile and dependent, his daughter Tilde is jealous of his advances towards other women, and his oldest adopted son Trung is hostile and defiant. The fifth chair at the dining room table, at which J.P. had hoped to seat a pretty woman, remains empty. J.P.'s frustrations grow and his tempar shortens.
"Table for Five" is set on locations ranging from the back streets of Rome to the Great Pyramids of Eygpt giving a beautiful backdrop to the emergence of love and friendship between a father and a child. When tragedy strikes,J.P. is drawn closer to his children and must begin a fight to keep them with him always.
