He had wealth, success and love - why wasn't it enough?
Director Elia Kazan, two-time Oscar-Winner for Gentlemen's Agreement and On The Waterfront, adapted his own-best selling novel for this riverting drama about a man who discovers that his entire life - his marriage, his work, his sexual encounters and his friendships - has been a series of empty "arangements".
It begins thrillingly as a rich and successful advertising executive Kirk Douglas tries to kill himself by driving his car at high speed under a truck. But the suicide attempt fails and, as he convalesces at his luxury home, Douglas painfully reviews the emptiness of his existence and the hollowness of the American Dream....
The film boasts superb central portrayals, dominated by Douglas who, said the Sunday Mirror, gives "prehaps his best performance" while, noted the Evening Standard, it is a "performance of immense stamina and subtlely". Deborah Kerr scores as his devoted wife and Faye Dunaway, as his mistress, is both beautiful and convincing. And Kazan's involving screenplay and assured direction make The Arrangement one of the most powerful and involving American films of the sixties.
