Wartime Liverpool. September 1944 in an upper-workingclass household. Since their tyrannical mother died, stern middle-aged Nellie (Joan Plowright) and her younger, bubbly sister Margo (Billie Whitelaw) have lived together with 17-yr old Rita, the daughter of their younger brother Jack, who now lives alone and vists once a week.
This beautifully crafted story evolves around naive, romantic Rita and her entrance into the adult world of G.I.s, parties and drink. She meets Wesley-a young G.I., innocent and eager for experience, who becomes a dangerous intrusion into the lives of the three women. His sexual advances evoke jealousy and fear in the prudish, confused Rita, desperation in moral, religious Nellie (made ill by the upheavels and changes brought about by the war)and joy and encouragement in the sparky, fun-loving Margo. Each must confront the strong emotions aroused in themselves and also each other that result from the complications the ypoung G.I brings.
One thing is for sure, the lives of the three women will never be the same while he's in the picture.
