Eight year old Amish boy Samuel Lapp (Lukas Haas) witnessed a brutal drug-related murder in the men's room of a Philadelphia train station. He is able to lead Police Captain John Book (Harrison Ford) to corruption investigation. The danger escalates when Book realises Deputy Commissioner Schaeffer's (Josef Sommer) involvement - his previous mentor and friend is now gunning for the lives of Samuel, his mother Rachel (Kelly McGillis) and Book in order to hide his collusion.
Book is wounded by corrupt narcotics chief McFee (Danny Glover) and the three of them disappear into the Amish community, a society unchanged since the 18th century without telephones, electricity or cars, completely secluded fro the outside world. As Book adapts to the unhurried pace of Amish life, he becomes romantically attached to the young widow, thereby unsettling both solid young farmer Daniel Hochleitner (Alexanda Godunov) who regards himself as her suitor, and her traditional father-in-law Eli Lapp (Jan Rubes). However his place in modern society is reaffirmed when the murdrers attack the farm at dawn.
