Paul Gauguin. In art, love and life,
he broke all the rules.
Paris, 1893.
Misunderstood genius Gauguin (Donald Sutherland) returns from Tahiti with exotic paintings of life in the tropics, which meet with hostility and rejection from the public. Disillusioned and in debt, he withdraws to the solace of teenage neighbour, Judith.
Saved from starvation by an inheritance, he visits a lover he left pregnant - Juliette, and their child. Still in love with her, he is depressed by her resfusal to return to him because of his affair with a Javanese model, Annah.
Frustrated, he sends Annah away, only to discover that she has vandalised his Paris Studio, destroying several paintings. Broke and desolate, he sells his remaining possessions for the fare to return to his beloved island paradise.
